What's the move?
Say there's that special and 'just-out-of-reach' guy/girl that you've got your eye on, and you find yourself in a position to lend them something of not-inconsequential value but that you wouldn't miss. Do you highlight your generosity and insist they just keep the item, or do you guarantee another meeting by making sure to get your item back?

You play somewhere in the middle. For example, "Why don't I come over and hang out? I need to pick up my [thing of not-inconsequential value] anyway." Then you conveniently forgot to take it home, setting up a similar future exchange.
I think the "why don't I come over and hang out?" negates a lot of the subtlety I was going for, but it's close. And I applaud the suggestion that sees through the false dichotomy.
